About Me

My name is Ryan Sears, and I currently work for Michigan Tech University doing everything from user support all the way to high end administration. I work on a farily large infrastructure (administrating 80% of campus), and it is BY FAR the best job i’ve ever had. I learn constantly, and have the resources to do almost anything I can think of. It truly is amazing to see something like a university network run from the inside.

Security is my passion, and I love looking at networks from that standpoint. I think that truly helps, as it normally takes a unique set of eyes on an infastructure to truly make it secure. I encounter people that just make things want to work, not necessarily work well, which is where I try to change things.

Music is another huge part of my life, and I hear it wherever I go :) . I’ve played guitar for a lot of years now, and I miss jazz band every day. Music just seems to put me in the right state of mind to do pretty much anything useful.

I watch a lot of movies and TV, but mostly its just playing in the background while I work. That is really where I spend most of my time, although I do like to hang out with people as well. It just requires so much more effort to go hang out with people in the middle of -20 degree weather :( .

I am a 3rd year CNSA (Computer Networking & System Administration) major here at MTU, and I hope to be out in another 2 years (hopefully). I love learning about computers a lot (not so much calculus – it sucks A LOT up here), and security in paticular grabs my interest to the point where I can be up till 4 or 5 in the morning and not even realize it.

I’m glad to answer any questions, and I love meeting new people, so if you like what I’m writing, drop me a line!

Also, if anyone just wants to pick my brain, i’ll be happy to answer any technical questions as well.
~Ryan
